Haile grew up in a poverty-stricken coffee community with limited opportunities. Despite becoming a talented spiritual singer, his passion for coffee never faded. One day, he visited Bette Buna, our export partner’s with a plan to create a coffee infant nursery and offer employment opportunities for jobless youth in his community. Bette Buna provided him with a chance to run a pilot program, which he successfully accomplished. Haile took a bold step, leaving his career as a Priest to pursue his new dream. Today, Haile is one of our leading cuppers and has assembled a dedicated team of 53 young adults who have found employment at Bette Buna Nursery.

Nansebo Farm and Station

The Bette Buna farm, spanning 20 hectares in Nansebo, is overseen by Kasim, their dedicated young cousin who aspires to uplift the community and promote its prosperity. Within a forested environment, they cultivate the 74112 and 74110 coffee varieties, alongside some plots of wild coffee varieties. During the peak season, they employ approximately 100 seasonal workers to pick and process cherries, ensuring the highest quality standards are met.

Working alongside their family members, Bette Buna operates a station for natural-processed coffees in Nansebo city. Coffee cherries harvested from the farm are meticulously cleaned and dried on half-shaded raised beds. This station has an annual production capacity of approximately 10,000 kg of natural and anaerobic processed coffee.

Quality and Traceability

Bette Buna assigns a distinctive identification number to every lot of freshly picked cherries arriving at their station. This practice allows them to maintain full traceability, enabling them to identify the supplying farmers, distinguish between different lots, and closely monitor the journey of each coffee throughout the entire supply chain. Furthermore, Bette Buna takes the initiative to name their lots after individuals or groups who exemplify the Bette Buna mission: changing the world through coffee.

About Bette Buna

Bette Buna is a young, dedicated Dutch-Ethiopian coffee farming family, building on the legacy of the farming-grandparents Syoum and Emame. Founded and led by Dawit and Hester in 2020 and started on a 2 hectare farm in Sidamo, the couple invested the last years in terms of volume, regions, quality and sustainable scaleable impact in coffee communities. They now farm and process coffee in four different regions: Gedeo, Sidamo, Guji and Limu. Bette Buna means literally 'the house of coffee' in Amharic, and that's their purpose: being a home of (amazing) coffee, where everyone involved in it can get an equal opportunity on development.
